The law firm of CaseyGerry is investigating a data breach that has impacted customers of insurance company, Elephant Insurance.
Elephant Insurance provides car, and other insurance services in the United States. The company is headquartered in Richmond, Virginia and is a subsidiary of Admiral Group plc, a leading international insurance company with a presence in North America, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, and India.
In a press release distributed on May 6, 2022, the company reported a breach that may have compromised the highly sensitive data of current and past customers, and individuals who may have submitted information for auto and other insurance quotes.
According to an article by Insurance Business Magazine, the compromised information includes individual’s name, date of birth and driver’s license number.
The Data Breach Notice filed with the Office of the Maine Attorney General states that 2,762,687 individuals nationwide may have been impacted by the breach.
What Happened?
Elephant Insurance became aware of unusual activity in April 2022. Their investigation revealed that their network system had been accessed by an unauthorized third-party between March 26 and April 1, 2022, and that files were viewed or copied by the perpetrator.
The company has been vague about the type of breach that occurred, and how far back the data maintained in their network went. The age of the data maintained in their network (and compromised in the breach) could be a determinator of past customers and potential customers who were affected in the breach.
