Hundreds of new California laws are on the books for 2018 – with legislation on guns, weed and pets sure to dominate the headlines.
The governor signed more than 800 bills into law over the last few months, but the legalization of recreational pot, approved by voters in November, is generating the most attention.
Californians over the age of 21 can now buy up to an ounce of marijuana – without a doctor’s permission.
New Laws in California Impact Minimum Wage, Parental Leave and More
Additional highlights of new California laws that went into effect January 1, 2018 include:
Baby-changing Tables in Men’s Rooms: Shopping malls, sports arenas and other large facilities must now be equipped with diaper changing stations in men’s as well as women’s rooms.
Parental Leave: Parents who work in small businesses can now take off 12 weeks off for maternity and paternity leave.
Feminine Hygiene Products in Schools: Requires public middle and high schools to offer free feminine hygiene products.
Driving While Toking: Makes it illegal to smoke or imbibe in marijuana while driving or riding as a passenger in a car.
Minimum Wage Increase: Minimum wage will increase by 50 cents an hour, up to $10.50 an hour for companies with less than 25 employees and $11 an hour for companies with 26 or more.
Ban the Box: Expands “Ban the Box” law to prohibit businesses from inquiring about a job applicant’s criminal history.
Gun Restrictions: Prohibits gun owners from carrying unloaded guns in unincorporated county areas.
