US Fertility (USF), the largest network of fertility centers in the US, reported a data breach that may have compromised the sensitive information of patients.
The physician-led network provides a range of professional management services to fertility clinics around the country, including secure data management.
The company reported the breach in late November of 2020, stating that the incident had occurred between August of 2020 and September 2020 compromising sensitive identifying and health information of some individuals. Due to the expansive reach of the network, the number of those who may have been affected is staggering. In the state of Washington, the personal and financial data of over 47,000 people were compromised.
USF reported that their computer systems containing sensitive data had been accessed by an unauthorized user. Their investigation found that a number of files had been encrypted by ransomware.
The encrypted files included highly sensitive information like patients’ information such as, name, address, date of birth, social security number, driver license number, passport number, MPI number, Health Insurance information, diagnoses, and credit/debit card information.
