The California Vehicle Code protects everyone who uses the road in the state – including truck drivers, passenger vehicle drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. In addition to federal laws, California has roadway regulations that specifically apply to large trucks and other commercial vehicles. The regulations are meant to prevent crashes involving these massive vehicles. Below is an overview of the federal trucking laws in San Diego.
The State of California often uses signs to restrict large trucks and certain commercial vehicles to certain lanes. The California Vehicle Code directs that when there are no signs restricting trucks to a certain lane, truck drivers must stay in the right-hand lane or as close as possible to the right edge of the road. When there are four or more marked lanes on a highway, drivers may also drive trucks in the lane to the immediate left of the right-hand lane.
When overtaking and passing another vehicle traveling in the same direction, truck drivers must use either the designated lane, the lane to the immediate left of the right-hand lane, or the right-hand lane.
In California, trucks with three or more axles and trucks towing other vehicles may not drive faster than 55mph on a highway.

San Diego has a few additional rules for large trucks. For example, parking a heavy-duty commercial vehicle is prohibited in residential areas unless the vehicle is loading or unloading goods or has a service call very close nearby.
In addition, parking unattached semi-trailers or auxiliary dollies – excluding camping and utility trailers – is prohibited on any street except when loading/unloading.
