March Marks Brain Injury Awareness Month

CaseyGerry Attorneys Specialize in Serious Brian Injury Cases

More than 1.5 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury each year. To raise awareness about this often debilitating injury, The Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) will mark Brain Injury Awareness Month – themed “Brain Injury: Anytime, Anywhere, Anyone” – this March.

“Brain Injury Awareness Month honors the millions of people with brain injury, who with proper acute care, therapeutic rehabilitation and adequate long-term support, are living with the successes and challenges that each day brings,” said Susan H. Connors, president/CEO of the Brain Injury Association of America. “Our goal is to sustain brain injury programs, increase access to care and preserve vital brain injury. “

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is described as a blow, jolt or bump to the head – or a penetrating head injury – that disrupts the normal function of the brain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Injury Prevention:

  • The leading cases TBI are falls, motor vehicle traffic crashes and workplace accidents.
  • More than three million people live with a life-long disability as the result of TBI.
  • About 75 % of TBIs that occur each year are concussions or other forms of mild traumatic brain injury
  • TBI is a contributing factor to more than thirty percent of all injury-related deaths in U.S.
