It’s the gold standard for many consumers: Made in the U.S.A. But despite the labeling, was your product really made here? Perhaps not.
Facing charges of deceptive labeling, high-end denim company Citizens of Humanity LLC and retailer Macy’s Inc. were faced with a class action in California federal court earlier this week. The lawsuit accuses them of misleading customers into thinking that Citizen’s “Boyfriend” jeans were made entirely in the U.S.A., when in fact, the jeans’ fabric, thread and buttons were manufactured overseas. The plaintiff maintains that Citizen and Macy’s hid information from shoppers – and were driven “solely by profit.”
The problem? Many consumers believe goods made in the U.S. are of higher quality, so to conceal where materials are actually made is misleading, the lawsuit alleges.
