CaseyGerry Partner Lauded for Work on VW Class Action
SAN DIEGO (March 22, 2018) CaseyGerry’s managing partner David S. Casey, Jr. has been recognized with a 2018 “California Lawyer of the Year” (CLAY) Award by the Daily Journal and California Lawyer, leading legal publications in California. This annual award recognizes lawyers throughout the state whose achievements have a significant impact on the law, the legal profession, a particular industry or the community.
The only San Diego lawyer to be honored, Casey Jr. was one of the California attorneys honored at the 22nd Annual CLAY Awards ceremony, held Tuesday, March 20, at The City Club in San Francisco. Recognizing some of the state’s most influential legal practitioners – lauded for using their considerable legal talents to bring about fairness – the awards are presented annually, and this year published in a March 21 Daily Journal/California Lawyer special supplement.
Featured in the Consumer Protection category, Casey, Jr. was selected for his work on the national VW Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee overseeing litigation targeting Volkswagen over its diesel emissions scandal. The Plaintiff’s Steering Committee (PSC) negotiated the $11 billion settlement – the largest in consumer class action history.
This was just one in a number of high profile leadership roles Casey, Jr. has held in recent years. In a case similar to the VW Diesel Emissions litigation, he was appointed to the national PSC overseeing the Eco Diesel Litigation against Fiat Chrysler now pending in the United States District Court. Additionally, he serves as liaison counsel for the Wells Fargo Multi-District Litigation (MDL) now pending in the United States District Court for the Central District of California.
He is past president of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (now known as the American Association for Justice), past president of both the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego and the Consumer Attorneys of California and serves on the board of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. A fellow of the International Academy of Barristers, he is the recipient of more than 60 awards and was most recently inducted into the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego’s “Trial Lawyer Hall of Fame.”
He received his bachelor’s degree from Trinity College and a law degree from the University of San Diego School of Law.
