As you know, the Eaton Fire was a catastrophic wildfire that erupted in the San Gabriel Mountains just after New Years in 2025. The blaze was driven by intense Santa Ana winds, and tore through Southern California’s foothills, affecting residents and business owners in Altadena, Pasadena, and surrounding areas.

The fire’s path of destruction made it one of the most significant and deadly events in the state’s history, and it triggered a massive wave of litigation involving utility companies. Stick with us for an update on the new Eaton fire trial date and how the case is moving forward.

Who Are the Primary Targets and Plaintiffs in the Eaton Fire?

The Eaton fire has led to a number of complex legal proceedings with several plaintiffs bringing suits against Southern California Edison (“SCE”). The primary petitioners are residents and business owners who are seeking compensation for wrongful death, property loss, personal injury, and emotional distress.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is seeking over $40 million in damages for fire suppression costs and destruction of National Forest land, as well as Los Angeles County, which is suing Southern California Edison (SCE) to recover costs for infrastructure damage, emergency response, and lost taxes.

Both the cities of Pasadena and Sierra Madre have also filed a lawsuit against the SCE for damages to public resources and infrastructure.

SCE now faces nearly 1,000 lawsuits alleging that a decommissioned, but re-energized, power line sparked the Eaton fire.

Updates on the Eaton Fire’s Bellwether Trial

Los Angeles Superior Court judge Laura Seigle has scheduled a bellwether trial for victims of the Eaton fire to consolidate the vast number of cases. Litigation is set to begin on Jan. 25, 2027. The hearing’s initial phase involves approximately 50 representative plaintiffs, to be selected during the spring of 2026, to test liability and damages. The outcome of these cases is expected to shape future settlement negotiations for the thousands of other victims.

The deadline for all pre-trial filings is Jan. 4, 2027. Judge Seigle rejected the SCE’s attempts to delay the trial until August 2027, maintaining the January 2027 start date to ensure justice for elderly and ill plaintiffs.
