CaseyGerry is investigating reports of Underhood Fires in 2021 to 2023 Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator vehicles.

Airport Fire

The alleged defect is said to affect over 781,000 vehicles, with the majority of incidents occurring when the ignition is off.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received reports of nine fire-related incidents, one injury, and one fatality. The NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has launched a preliminary investigation to determine whether a recall is necessary.

What is the Defect in the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator Models?

Numerous reports describe fires starting in the front passenger side of the engine compartment, usually when the vehicle is off. Further investigation suggests that the issue may stem from the power steering pump electrical connector, which is located on the passenger front side of the engine compartment, consistent with the incident reports.

These fires occur with little or no warning, adding to the concern. The ODI has contacted the manufacturer, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), who is cooperating with the investigation.

Some Jeep Wrangler drivers are concerned that the numbers of potentially affected units are underestimated, or key information is being withheld. A member of a JeepWrangler Forum, posted a statement questioning why the investigation only impacted the 2021-2023 models as earlier versions (2018-2021) had the same power steering pump as the affected models.

On the same forum, a Jeep Gladiator owner posted about their experience with their recently purchased Jeep Gladiator Rubicon.

The driver purchased their car in February 2024. In late April 2024, the car was parked in the garage. The driver smelled smoke and went to check the cause. The garage was engulfed in smoke and there were flames coming from underneath the engine compartment. The smoke damage amounted to over $200,000. The new vehicle had just reached 1000 miles.

Low mileage appears to be a recurring factor in other reports of the same issue.

What Can You Do?

While the manufacturer has not yet announced a recall, the ODI is actively investigating the matter. Many drivers may not have experienced the issue or may have encountered it without reporting it. Given that only nine reports have been filed—despite the potential dangers—a recall may not be issued unless further evidence emerges.
