American Family Mutual Insurance Company has reported a data breach that may have affected more than 280,000 individuals. The incident which was discovered on March 18, 2021, occurred between February 6 and March 19, 2021, when an unauthorized third-party or parties used individuals’ personal information acquired elsewhere, to access personal data through the company’s quoting platform.
According to the Notice of Data Breach sent out, the hacker/s attempted to access driver’s license numbers by applying for insurance quotes using other personal information such as names and addresses.
The notice warns individuals to remain alert to suspicious unemployment claims, as the compromised data may be fraudulently used to apply for unemployment benefits under individuals’ names.
