Bridge Fire: Largest Active Fire and Third Largest in 2024

Firefighters are currently battling three wildfires in Southern California: the Airport Fire, the Line Fire, and the Bridge Fire, which is currently the largest active fire.

The Bridge Fire is ravaging areas around the Angeles National Forest, burning more than 53,000 acres just four days after starting. The flames have damaged many residences, including homes on Mt. Baldy and Wrightwood, and destroyed six cabins in the wilderness area. By September 14th, on 3% of the fire was contained.

The Bridge Fire started on September 8, 2024, near East Fork and Glendora Mountain roads. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire and believe that human activity, such as improperly extinguished campfires or smoking materials, may have been the cause.

The arid and hot conditions contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. Within the first day, the fire burned thousands of acres. Over the next several days, the fire spread into the areas of Mt. Baldy and other populated areas, triggering evacuation orders for residents. By Saturday, September 14, 2024, the fire had ravaged over 53,000 acres and affected Wrightwood’s water system, making the water unsafe to drink.

Authorities issued evacuation orders for areas in Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties, including Los Angeles’ East Fork and River Communities, Mt. Baldy, and San Bernardino’s Wrightwood area, as the fire continues to spread.

The Bridge Fire has caused major destruction to the natural habitat. In addition, 19 structures have been destroyed, and nine have sustained fire damage. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

Firefighters continue to battle the Bridge Fire, working to curb the spread of the flames fueled by the dry conditions and vegetation.

Evacuation orders are in place for Baldy Village, Camp Williams Resort, and nearby communities in Los Angeles County, and Wrightwood and Pinon Hills in San Bernardino County.
