Johnson & Johnson has issued a recall for four Neutrogena® sunscreen products and one Aveeno® sunscreen product for containing the carcinogen benzene. All recalled products are aerosol sunscreen products.
In a press release issued by Johnson & Johnson, benzene is not an ingredient in Johnson & Johnson products and the company is investigating its presence in the recalled sunscreens.
According to an article by Reuters, David Light, Chief Executive of Valisure said that the presence of benzene in the sunscreen products could be a result of contaminated raw materials used. Valisure, an independent quality assurance company published an article on May 24, 2021, requesting the FDA to recall numerous sunscreens including several Johnson & Johnson products due to the presence of benzene.
On July 14, 2021, Johnson & Johnson announced that they were voluntarily recalling the following products:
- NEUTROGENA® Beach Defense® aerosol sunscreen
- NEUTROGENA® Cool Dry Sport aerosol sunscreen
- NEUTROGENA® Invisible Daily™ defense aerosol sunscreen
- NEUTROGENA® Ultra Sheer® aerosol sunscreen
- AVEENO® Protect + Refresh aerosol sunscreen
