Why Are People Filing Elmiron® Lawsuits?

Elmiron® (pentosan polysulfate) is a medication used to treat interstitial cystitis, a condition that causes chronic pelvic discomfort and urinary problems. As it is the only drug approved by the FDA to treat the condition, an estimated 25 percent of the one million+ people in the U.S. with interstitial cystitis take Elmiron®.

Unfortunately, studies are increasingly finding that certain serious eye conditions may be related to Elmiron® use. In 2019, the American Academy of Ophthalmology released a report that showed a correlation between Elmiron® use and vision loss and/or ocular damage. Another study in 2020 linked Elmiron® to pigmentary maculopathy and similar diagnoses. However, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson and the maker of Elmiron®, has not recalled the drug despite these and other findings. It was only in June 2020 that Janssen updated the warnings on its label to include possible eye damage and vision loss.

Those who have developed eye problems are filing lawsuits against Janssen for its failure to warn them and their doctors about the risk. CaseyGerry is representing some of these individuals and is seeking compensation on their behalf for their medical bills, lost wages due to these eye problems, and pain and suffering.

Elmiron® Multidistrict Litigation

More than 90 people have filed claims alleging they’ve developed eye damage after taking Elmiron®. Many of those lawsuits have been consolidated into a multidistrict litigation, or MDL. An MDL brings together similar claims nationwide before one judge, which allows plaintiffs’ to better stand up to huge corporations like Janssen.

Time Is Short to File an Elmiron® Lawsuit

Each state limits the time a person may file a lawsuit over eye damage related to Elmiron®. It’s important to contact a law firm for a free case evaluation as soon as possible.

If you used Elmiron® for at least one year and are suffering from maculopathy or other vision problems, we can help you understand your legal rights and the next steps. We welcome you to contact CaseyGerry for a free, no-hassle consultation with a knowledgeable attorney.
