Thousands of consumers are now receiving official notice letters from TransUnion regarding the Salesforce data breach. These letters confirm that personal information was exposed in a cyberattack and outline steps TransUnion is taking in response. If you received one, here’s what it means.
What the TransUnion Data Breach Notice Letter Says
According to a Notice of Data Incident letter sent by TransUnion to affected consumers in September 2025, the company confirmed a cyber incident involving a third-party application used in its U.S. consumer support operations. Attackers gained unauthorized access to certain personal data.
TransUnion stated that the breach involved personal identifiers, including:
- Social Security Numbers (SSN)
- Dates of Birth (DOB)
News reports have confirmed that these letters are genuine. WGAL News 8 reported that TransUnion verified the authenticity of the breach notification letters being sent to consumers, which informed them that their Social Security numbers and dates of birth may have been exposed (WGAL News 8).
What Information Was Involved
- Even though TransUnion says full credit files were not exposed, the combination of SSN and DOB is highly sensitive. Criminals can use these identifiers to attempt:
- Identity theft
- Opening fraudulent accounts
- Filing false tax returns
- Other long-term fraud schemes
Steps After Receiving a TransUnion Breach Notice Letter
If you received one of these letters, here are the steps you should consider:
- Enroll in the free credit monitoring immediately.
- Save your notice letter in case it’s needed for legal or financial disputes.
- Place a credit freeze or fraud alert with all three bureaus (TransUnion, Equifax, Experian).
- Monitor your accounts and credit reports for unusual activity.
- Stay alert to scams – attackers may impersonate TransUnion or banks using your stolen data.
