Riding a motorcycle takes practice and special skills. To ride legally, you must meet the California motorcycle license requirements and hold a valid Class M license. These requirements include safety training, a knowledge exam, and in some cases a road test.
Types of Motorcycle Licenses in California
There are two motorcycle license options in California:
-
Class M1: This license allows riders to operate any two-wheeled motorcycle and all vehicles listed in the Class M2 designation.
-
Class M2: This license allows riders to operate motorized bicycles, bicycles with attached motors, and mopeds.
To operate a traditional motorcycle, you will have to pursue a Class M1 license.
How to Obtain a Motorcycle License in California
The process for meeting the California motorcycle license requirements depends on your age and riding experience.
Under 21
Applicants under the age of 21 and at least 15 and a half must complete a motorcycle safety course approved by the CHP (15 hours of instruction) or pass the driving test and hold a valid permit for at least six months. They must then apply for a driver’s license or identification card, provide their name and Social Security number, pay an application fee, and pass both a vision exam and a knowledge test. Applicants have three chances to pass the test before starting over.
Over 21
Those wishing to apply for a motorcycle license over the age of 21 must either successfully complete a CHP-approved training course or pass a DMV motorcycle skills test (road test). They will also need to complete an application, provide their Social Security number, identity documents, proof of residency, and pay the fee. The DMV will scan fingerprints, take a photo, and require a vision exam and knowledge test. Anyone who does not have a course completion certificate must take the DMV road test.
Safety & Responsibility
All motorcyclists must also provide proof of financial responsibility — in other words, purchase insurance that meets or exceeds California’s minimum liability requirements. In addition, California law requires all riders to wear a helmet, regardless of age.
