Why is Tesla Being Sued?
CaseyGerry is investigating the concerning incident in which hackers claimed to have obtained every US citizen’s Social Security number in the National Public Data breach. Jericho Pictures, Inc. d/b/a National Public Data base, collects data from all across the internet, then sells it to businesses. They provide personal data for background checks, employee history and more to staffing agencies, employers, private investigators, and other parties who utilize such information.
On April 8, 2024, the hacking group known as USDoD posted on the dark web, claiming to have stolen data from the National Public Data breach, including the Social Security numbers of 2.9 billion US citizens. This data set was for sale for $3.5 million. The cybercriminal group purported to have identifying information on almost 3 billion individuals, including name, date of birth, phone number, physical address, and Social Security numbers.
National Public Data were made aware of the cybercriminals’ post yet failed to notify those affected about the breach and only responded to inquiries that they were aware of the claims and were investigating the issue.
Potential Threats to Victims of Data Breaches
Individuals whose personal data is exposed or stolen may face a lifetime of vulnerability to identity fraud, financial ruin, and even digital exploitation. The more identifiable and sensitive the data, the more valuable it is to cybercriminals. For example, financial information, driver’s license numbers, and Social Security numbers are some of the most sought-after data on the dark web, as this information can be used to open bank accounts and credit cards under the victim’s name.
