Historic 9/11 Pro Bono Effort

“While the death and destruction caused by the events of 9/11 are incomprehensible, what many don’t realize is that this disaster paved the way for the most important – and largest – pro bono effort in the history of American Jurisprudence: Trial Lawyers Care, a program developed by The Association of Trial Lawyers of American (ATLA) which provided hope for hundreds of families.” – David S. Casey, Jr.

The horrific events of 9/11 paved the way for the largest pro bono effort in the history of American Jurisprudence – Trial Lawyers Care (TLC), developed by The Association of Trial Lawyers of American (now the American Association for Justice) to support the families of the victims of 9/11. As vice president of ATLA, David S. Casey, Jr., helped form TLC in the aftermath of 9/11 and, in 2004, oversaw its conclusion while president of ATLA. Immediately following the attacks, ATLA called for a moratorium on any lawsuits and encouraged the enactment of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund – the most generous compensation program since Medicare was enacted in the 1960s. TLC was formed soon afterwards. More than 1,100 attorneys nationwide participated – including three CaseyGerry attorneys – securing awards of more then $2.5 billion. Over 1,700 plaintiffs were represented and the value of the pro bono legal services provided exceeded $300 million dollars. Volunteer attorneys have said that representing TCL has been the most rewarding experience of their career.
