CaseyGerry is investigating the Covenant HealthCare data security breach that may have compromised the information of more than 40,000 patients.
Covenant HealthCare, the largest health care provider in the Great Lakes Bay Region recently reported a data security breach confirming that two employee email accounts had been accessed by an unauthorized third-party on May 4, 2020. Highly sensitive health and financial information of approximately 45,000 patients was compromised in the breach.
Even more concerning, an FBI investigation found that the patient data accessed in the Covenant HealthCare breach was for sale on the dark web.
Covenant HealthCare provides an extensive range of medical services including Primary care, Cancer services, Laboratory services, Women’s health, and Child services to name a few.
The company has notified some of the individuals whose data may have been compromised in the breach, however, they were unable to find the contact information for all who were impacted.
The compromised data includes identifiable patient information such as, name, date of birth, Social security number and driver’s license number; financial information like account numbers, and health-related information like diagnosis, treatment, prescription, doctors’ name, medical record number and insurance information.
In response to the breach, the company stated that they have implemented a multi-step authentication for employee email accounts. However, it may be too little too late.
The Covenant HealthCare breach is the latest in a throng of cyberattacks on the healthcare industry. With such a prevalence of cyberattacks, especially for medical service providers, it is inexcusable that a medical provider of that size failed to protect highly sensitive data of those who trusted them.
