Tree Top Data Breach

December 28, 2020 Data Breaches

On November 11, 2020, Tree Top Inc. and its subsidiary Northwest Naturals, Inc. discovered a data breach that compromised sensitive information of past and current employees of Tree Top Inc. and Northwest Naturals, Inc., their beneficiaries, and dependents, and even job applicants. In addition, information of members of the Tree Top cooperative, and Tree Top Mail order customers were also compromised.

The company discovered the breach when unusual activity was detected. Their investigation revealed that an unauthorized party had accessed a user account and through that, infiltrated several of the company’s servers.

Tree Top Inc. is one of the leading fruit juice growing and processing companies in the country. It is a made up of more than 1000 apple and pear growers in Idaho, Oregon and Washington, and reports an annual revenue of $345 million. With a long history and an extensive list of owner-growers, customers, and employees, it is uncertain how many people’s data is now in the hands of cyber criminals.

Unfortunately, not only did the hackers gain access to a large network of individuals, they also accessed highly sensitive information including:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Social security number
  • Bank account information
  • Credit card number including the three-digit security code
  • Health insurance information and even medical information
  • Mailing address
  • Tax Identification Number
