SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Thomas D. Penfield — a partner with San Diego-based law firm Casey Gerry— was recently named a member of The Fellows of the American Bar Foundation (ABF), an honorary organization of attorneys, judges and law professors whose professional, public and private careers have demonstrated outstanding dedication to the welfare of their communities and to the highest principles of the legal profession.
The Fellows of the American Bar Foundation provides integral support to the ABF — an organization dedicated to advancing justice through rigorous research on the law, legal processes and the law’s impact on society. Membership in the Fellows — established in 1955— is limited to only one third of one percent of lawyers licensed to practice in each jurisdiction. Members are nominated by current fellows and elected by the board of the American Bar Foundation.
“We are honored that Tom has been named a Fellow of this prestigious organization, and that he will continue to represent our firm on a national level,” said Casey Gerry’s senior partner David S. Casey, Jr.
Penfield, who was also recently appointed chair of the Task Force on Plaintiff’s Involvement of the Tort, Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) of the American Bar Association (ABA), concentrates his practice on personal injury, products liability and class actions, and has been an attorney with Casey Gerry since 1988. Active in both community and professional organizations, he is also president of the Bar Association of North San Diego County, a Fellow in the National College of Advocacy of the American Association for Justice and a past recipient of the Environmental Lawyer of the Year Award from the Sierra Club’s San Diego Chapter. Prior to joining Casey Gerry, he worked as a supervising trial lawyer with the Defenders Program of San Diego, and as a full-time clinical Professor of Law at the University of San Diego (USD) School of Law, where he still teaches as an Adjunct Professor of Law. He is a graduate of California Western School of Law (J.D. 1974).
Headquartered in Chicago, the American Bar Foundation is the nation’s leading research institute for the empirical study of law. An independent, nonprofit organization for more than fifty years, ABF seeks to advance the understanding and improvement of law through research projects of unmatched scale and quality on the most pressing issues facing the legal system in the United States and the world. The Foundation is committed to broad dissemination of research findings to the organized bar, scholars and the general public, and the results are published in a wide range of forums, including leading academic journals, law reviews, and academic and commercial presses.
