March 12, 2021 Data Breaches

Assistcare Home Health Services LLC dba Preferred Home Care of New York/Preferred Gold has reported a data breach that may have impacted the personal information of the company caregivers.

Preferred Home Care of New York works with about 7,000 certified aids across the state of New York. They are one of the largest in-home care providers in the state, serving over 40,000 clients.

The company reported that an unauthorized third-party infiltrated their network gaining access to files containing personal and financial data of caregivers.

They reported that the breach was discovered on January 9, 2021. Highly sensitive information may have been exposed including, name, date of birth, Social security number, physical and email address, phone number, medical information such as health assessments, drug screens and vaccinations, as well as financial information such as bank account number, and worker’s compensation claims.

In an attempt to reassure those affected, the breach notification sent out states, “Currently, we are not aware of any fraudulent activity or misuse of anyone’s information as a result of the incident. Furthermore, we do not believe that the use of personal information was the primary motive behind the third party’s actions.” However, the company fails to report what they believe motive was.
