Bicycle Accident Litigation
More and more communities are touting their ‘bicycle culture” by building bike-friendly streets and facilities which in turn encourage cycling as a serious alternative to driving. And, many corporations provide impressive incentives to employees who opt for pedal power over car power to work.
Recent data confirms the explosive growth of cycling. The National Household Travel Survey revealed that the number of trips made by bicycle in the U.S. more than doubled in recent years — from 1.7 billion in 2001 to 4 billion in 2009.
As a result, we are sharing the road with an increasing number of bike riders heading to work, school and play. While this trend is beneficial to our environment and our health, it’s also a trend fraught with potential danger that can’t be overlooked.
According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Adminstration (NHTSA), 726 cyclists were killed and an additional 50,000 injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2014. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports most cycling injuries are to arms and legs with head injuries on the rise. From the late ‘90s to now bike injuries increased 28%, and hospitalizations after bike injury increased from 5.1 to 11.2 per 100,000 U.S. adults, a 120% rise.
